IODOSORB Ointment is a sterile dark brown ointment consisting of cadexomer (modified starch microbeads), polyethylene glycol, poloxamer and iodine. The cadexomer beads are biodegradable. IODOSORB Ointment will remove excess exudate and slough from the wound bed, and reduce bacteria at the wound surface. In doing this, it transforms into a soft moist gel. IODOSORB Ointment is indicated for the topical treatment of chronic exuding wounds. IODOSORB Ointment can be used under compression therapy. IODOSORB Ointment may be used on infected wounds. Where the product is used on infected wounds the infection should be inspected and treated as per local clinical protocol.
Product Directions:
Applying IODOSORB Ointment
1. Wash hands thoroughly before and after use. Using gloved hands, clean the wound and the surrounding area with either a gentle stream of water or saline. DO NOT DRY the wound surface.
2. Apply sufficient IODOSORB Ointment to a sterile dressing to form a layer 3mm deep, which conforms to the shape of the wound. Place the IODOSORB Ointment covered dressing onto the wound. Alternatively, apply IODOSORB Ointment to the wound and smooth into place with a gloved finger, to the shape of the wound and depth of 3mm.
3. Cover the wound completely with an appropriate secondary dressing.
4. Apply compression bandaging when appropriate. After application, the remaining contents of the tube should be discarded due to loss of sterility.
Changing IODOSORB Ointment
1. IODOSORB Ointment should be changed when it has become saturated with wound fluid and all the iodine has been released. This is indicated by loss of colour, usually two to three times a week. If the wound is discharging heavily, daily changes may be needed. If necessary, soak the dressing for a few minutes, and then remove.
2. Gently remove the IODOSORB Ointment using a stream of water or saline.
3. Gently blot any excess fluid, leaving the wound surface slightly moist, before reapplying IODOSORB Ointment.
